Caterpillar External Canteen

About the client.

Caterpillar Inc., a global leader in manufacturing construction and mining equipment, has recently invested in enhancing the well-being of its workforce by renovating staff facilities at one of its UK sites. Following the successful upgrade of the internal canteen, Roshal was commissioned to deliver an outdoor space—an inviting area for staff to relax and enjoy their breaks during the warmer months.

The brief.

The objective was clear: to transform the underused external space into a vibrant, alfresco dining area. The space needed to be functional, aesthetically pleasing, low-maintenance, and ready in time for the British summer. Roshal was tasked with designing and delivering an outdoor experience that encouraged relaxation while aligning with Caterpillar’s brand and employee-focused culture.

Our solution.

To deliver this vision, Roshal approached the project with a combination of landscaping expertise and thoughtful design implementation.

Site Preparation

• Existing pebble stones were carefully removed using a mini digger.
• Full de-weeding of the area was carried out to restore a clean base.
• A Geotextile membrane sheeting was supplied and installed to prevent future weed growth and maintain the appearance long-term.

Hard Surface Restoration

• Existing block paving was treated using an intensive surface cleaner.
• A pressure washer surface cleaner was used to clean all block paving, removing embedded grime, debris, and rubbish.

Aesthetic Enhancements

• Laid new decorative gravel (~30mm depth) across the gravelled sections in line with the agreed design concept.
• Perimeter walls were refreshed using Dulux Weather shield Smooth Masonry Paint, giving the space a clean, finished look.
• External lighting was added to enhance both safety and ambiance, ensuring the area remained inviting even during early evenings.

Furniture & Final Touches

• Supplied and installed new, durable outdoor furniture, offering both comfort and practicality to staff during breaks.
