About the client

The BBC Asian Network, based at The Mailbox in Birmingham, is a vibrant and culturally rich radio station that celebrates British Asian music, news, and entertainment. Roshal has a longstanding relationship with the BBC, having delivered numerous successful projects across various locations.

The brief

Roshal was commissioned to carry out a full turnkey refurbishment of three key rooms within the BBC Asian Network’s premises:

  • Playlist Room
  • Pluggers Room
  • Green Room

Each space required comprehensive upgrades across multiple disciplines, including:

  • Walls
  • Floors
  • Ceilings
  • Electrical
  • Curtains (where applicable)

In addition, Roshal was tasked with creating a bespoke display wall in the main office area, designed to reflect the energy and identity of the Asian Network brand. The client specified materials and colour schemes to ensure consistency with the station’s bold and expressive visual language.

Our solution

Working within a live broadcast environment, Roshal carefully planned and executed the refurbishment with minimal disruption to daily operations. The majority of the work was completed during normal working hours, requiring precise coordination and flexibility.

Key elements of our approach included:

  • Clear and continuous communication with BBC stakeholders
  • Strict adherence to brand guidelines and material specifications as per the tender
  • Efficient project management to deliver a seamless and timely transformation

This particular refurbishment was especially exciting due to the dynamic and colourful identity of the Asian Network.

To elevate the project beyond a standard refurbishment, Roshal also introduced a number of specialist features:

  • Bespoke Light Boxes: Three custom light boxes, one in each room, were designed and installed to create striking visual focal points and enhance ambient lighting.
  • Acoustic-Backed Fabric Walls: Walls were finished with niche acoustic-backed fabric, improving both the sound quality and overall finish of the rooms.
  • Infinity Wall Decoration: An infinity wall was decorated to provide a seamless backdrop an uncommon feature that delivered both functional and aesthetic benefits for a creative broadcast environment.

The Outcome

The refurbished spaces now provide the BBC Asian Network with:

  • Enhanced acoustic and visual comfort
  • A modern, energised aesthetic aligned with the station’s bold identity
  • Improved functionality for both creative and operational teams
  • Bespoke design details, including the light boxes, acoustic-backed walls, and infinity wall, which set these spaces apart from typical broadcast studios

The bespoke display wall in the office area has become a standout feature, showcasing the network’s personality and achievements, and creating a strong first impression for visitors.

Conclusion

Through a carefully managed refurbishment and the addition of unique design features, Roshal successfully transformed the BBC Asian Network’s key spaces at The Mailbox. The project demonstrates Roshal’s ability to deliver turnkey solutions in live environments while incorporating bespoke elements that balance technical performance with creative design impact.
